Actes and Monumentes Of the Church

holly bread, Saint Ihons gospell, or makinge crosses of of wood vpon palme sonday, in time of redyng of the passyon, or kepyng of pryuate hollydays, as Bakers, Bruers, Smythes, Shomakers and such other doo, or ryngyng of the holy belles or blefling with the holy candle to the intent therby to be discharged of þe burdē of sinne, or driue away deuills, or to put awaye dreames and phantasies, or in putting trust or confidence of helth and saluation in the same ceremonies, when they be only ordeined, to put vs in remembrance of the benefits which we haue receaued by Christ. And if anye vse them for any other purpose, he greuously offendeth God

Although Injunction 27 mandates strict observance of ecclesiastical ceremonies, it anticipates the forthcoming abrogation of many elements in the traditional service by denying that ceremonies discharge any soteriological function.

MarginaliaAll monuments of idolatry to be extinguished out of churches houses, and windows.Also that they shall take away, vtterly extincte and destroye, all Shrines, couerings of Shrines, tables. cādlestickes, trindilles, or rols of Waxe, Pictures, Paintinges and all other monumentes of fained miracles, pilgrimages, Idolatry & superstitiō, so that ther remayne no memory of the same wals glasses, wīdowes or els wher, within ther churches or houses. And they shall exhort all there perishoners to doo the like with in there seuerall houses. And that the churchwardenes at the common charge of the perishoners in euery church, shal prouide a comely and honest pulpit to be set in a conuenient place, within the same, for the preaching of Godes worde.

Injunction 28 gives official sanction to the iconoclastic destruction of shrines and religious images and to shrines that constitute objects of veneration, including those in stained glass windows.

MarginaliaA cheast to be prouided vpon publike charge to receaue the almes of the poore And the curat to cal vpon to geue to the same cheast.Also they shall prouide and haue with in iii. monethes after this visitation, a stronge cheste with a hole in the vpper part thereof to be prouided, at the cost and charrge of the parish, hauing thre keyes, wherof one shal remain in the custodye of the persone, vicare or curat, and the other two in the custodye of the church wardēs or any other two honest men, to be appoynted by the parish from yere to yere, wihch chest you shall set and fasten nere vnto the high aultare, to the intent the parishoners shoulde put into it there oblation & almes for their poore neighbours and the persone vicare or curate shall diligently from time to time, and especially whē men make there testamentes, call vpon, exhort and moue there neighbores to couferre & giue as they may well spare, to the said chest, declaring vnto them where as heretofore, they haue bene diligent to bestow much substance, otherwise then God commaunded vpon pardones pilgremages, Trentalles, decking of Images, offring of candles, geuing to the friers, and vp on other like blinde deuotions, they ought at this time to be much more redye to helpe the poore and nedy, knowinge that to releue the poore is a true worshippinge of god, required ernestly vpon payn of euerlasting dampnatiō. and that also what so euer is giuen for there cōfort is geuen to Christ him self, and so is accepted of him, that he will mercifully rewarde the same with euerlasting life, the which almes and deuotion of the people, the kepers of the keyes shal at al times cōueniēt take out of the church and distribute the same in the presence of the whole parish or sixe of them, to be trulye and faithfully deliuered to their most nedye neighbours. And if they be prouided for, then to the reperations of the high ways next adioyning. And also the mony which riseth of fraternities guiles and other stockes of the church, excepte by the kings maiestis autoriti it be otherwise appoynted shalbe put into the said chest and cōuerted to the said vse, & also the rentes of lādesthe profite of cattell and monye geuen and bequeathed to the finding of torches, lightes tapers and lampes, shalbe conuerted to the saide vse, sauing that it shalbe lawfull for them to bestowe parte of the saide profittes vppon the reparacions of the church, if greate nede require, and where as the parish is very poore, and not hable otherwise to repare the same. And for as much as priestes be publike minysters of the church, and vpon the holydayes ought to aply them selues to the common ministration of the whole parish, they shalbe bound to go to wemē lieng in childbed except in time of dāgerrous sicknes, and not to fet any course before it be brought to the churchyarde, & if the woman be sick, or the course brought to the church, the priest shall doo his deuty accordinglye, in visiting the woman and burieng the dead person.

Simony forbidden in bieng and selling of benefices.

Also to auoyde the detestable sinne of Simony, bycause of bieng and selling of benefices is execrable before God, therefore al such persons as bie any benefice or come to them by fraud or disceate, shalbe depriued of such benefices, and be made vnable at any time after, to receaue any other spirituall promocions and such as do sell them, or by any cullor do bestowe them for there owne gaine and profit, shall lose the right and title of patronage, and prefentmēt for that time and the gift therof for that vacation shall appertaine to the kiges maiesty. Acknowledging the existence of an inadequate supply of learned clerics, Injunction 32 enjoins unlicensed preachers to read officially authorized sermons in Certain sermons, or homilies, appoynted by the kynges maiestie, to be declared and redde. Its initial publication on 31 July 1547 coincided with that of the Royal Injunctions. The King's Printer, Richard Grafton, or his associate, Edward Whitchurch, published eleven editions of the Book of Homilies during 1547 (STC 13638.5-13641.9). Various hands contributed twelve sermons on a range of topics (e.g., exhortations on original sin, against whoredom and adultery, and against strife and contention). It is a virtual certainty that Archbishop Cranmer composed the homilies on Bible reading, salvation, faith, and works, which expound the core Reformation doctrine of justification by faith alone and the concomitant position that good works lack efficacy in themselves and possess no validity if they are not grounded in faith. And that all graces to be sayd at dyner and supper, shalbe alwayes sayd in the Englysh tongue. And that none other gramer shalbe taught in any skoole or other place with in the Kinges realmes and domynyous, but only that which is set forth by the same autoryty. Item that all Chantry pryestes shal excercyse them selues in teachyng youth to reade & wryte, and bring thē vp in good manners, and other vertuous exer cercises. Item when any sermon or homelye shalbe hadde, the pryme and howres shalbe omitted.
