them that dwell on the earth, by meanes of the signes whiche were permitted to hym to doe in the sight of the beast. MarginaliaMiracles are to bee tryed.By all these thyngs is it most manifest and plaine, that in miracles this manifold errour, oftentymes happeneth thorough the working of the deuill, to deceaue the people withall. Wherfore, we ought not for the working of miracles, to departe from the commaundementes of God. I would to God, that they which put confidence in miracles would geue hede vnto the woorde of Christ, in þe 7. cha. of Math. thus speakyng: Many shal say vnto me in that day, Lord Lord, haue we not in thy name prophesied? and in thy name cast out deuilles? and in thy name done many great works?&c. MarginaliaMat. 7. I will professe vnto them, I neuer knew you, depart frō me all ye which work iniquitie. MarginaliaThe seruantes of Christ discerned by workyng not of miracles, but of vertues.By this saying it is most manifest, þt the seruants of Christe are not discerned by the working of miracles, but by þe working of vertues, in departyng frō iniquitie, & obeying þe cōmaundemēts of god. Wherfore it is wonderful, þt any in this lyfe dare presume to preuēt the day of þe iudgement of God, to iudge by meanes of miracles, that some are saintes whom men ought to worship, whō peraduenture God will in the last iudgement condēpne, saying: depart from me all ye whiche worke iniquity. If anye man coulde here on earthe iudge sinners to be condēpned, then if this iudgement were certaine, Christe shuld not iudge the secōd tyme, and what soeuer such iudges bynde in earth, the same ought to be boūd in heauē. MarginaliaMen or womē, are not rashly to be iudged Saintes.But if such a iudgement be vncertayne, then it is perilous and full of deceate, when as by it mē on earth may in steade of sainctes, worshyp such as are damned with the felowship of the deuils, and in prayers require theyr ayde, who euen like as the deuils theyr companions are more ready & more of might to euil then to good, more to hurt then to profit. I wōder they marke not what Christ sayd, when his kinsewoman came vnto hym, desiring & requiryng somethyng of him, and saying: Commaunde that these my two sonnes may sit, one vpō thy right hād, and the other vpon thy left hand, in thy kyngdome. But Iesus aunswering sayd: Ye know not what ye aske, can ye drinke of the cup which I shall drinke of? they said vnto him, we can. He sayd vnto them, Of my cup in deede ye shall drinke, but to sit at my right hand or at my left, it is not mine to geue, but vnto whom it is prepared for, of my father. Christ, beyng equal vnto the father accordyng to his Godhead, excedyng all maner of men accordyng to his manhode, namely in goodnes and wisdome, said: to sit at my right hand, or at my left, is not myne to geue, but vnto whom it is prepared of my father. If it were none of his to geue to sit at the right hand or at the left. &c. How then is it in the power, if any sinnefull man to geue vnto any man, a seate either on the right hande, or on the left in the kyngdome of God: whiche sinnefull man knoweth not, whether such haue any seate prepared for them of the father, in his kyngdome. They much extoll them selues, whiche excercise this iudiciall power in geuyng iudgement: that there are some saintes, which ought to be honoured of men, by reason of the euidency of dreames or of deceatfull miracles, of which men they are ignoraunt whether God in his iudgement will condēpn thē or not together with þe deuils for euer to be tormented. Let them beware, for the vnfallible truth sayth, that euery one that exalteth him self shalbe brought low.

By these thinges is gathered, that the wars of Christians are not lawfull, MarginaliaThis proposition of Walter Brute, concerning the warre of Christiās not to be lawfull: is not to be taken vniuersally, but in perticular case as he meaneth, which is this: that such wars alowed of the pope not for the necessary defence of publike peace, libertie and sauefor that by the doctrine and lyfe of Christ they are prohibited, by reason of the euidencie of the deceitefull miracles of those, whych haue made wars amongest the Christians, as well agaynst the Christians, as also against the infidels. Because Christ coulde not erre in his doctrine, for as much as he was God: And for as muche as heauen and earth shal passe away, but the wordes of Christ shal Marginaliagard of our countreies, or against publike iniuries offered: but onely to goe and kill the infidels, because thei beleue not hauing no other cause: those warres of the pope he lyketh not.not passe away. He therfore which establisheth his lawes, allowing wars and the slaughters of men in the war, as wel of Christians, as of infidels: doth he not iustefy those things which are contrary vnto the Gospel and law of Christ? Therefore in this he is against Christ, and therfore Antichrist: seducing the people, making men beleue that to be lawfull and meritorious vnto thē, which is expressedly prohibited by Christ

¶ And thus much concerning the first part, touchyng peace and warre, wherein he declareth Christ, and the Pope to be contrary, that is, the one to be geuen all to peace, the other all to warre, and so to proue in conclusion the Pope to be Antichrist. Where in the meane time thou must vnderstand (gentle reader ) his meaning rightly:

Here Foxe interrupts Brut's discourse with his own paragraph 'explaining' that Brut was denouncing wars undertaken by the Papacy, not all wars among Christians.

not that he so thynketh, no kinde of warres among Christians in any case to be lawfull: for he hym selfe before, hath openly protested to the contrary. But that his purpose is to proue, the Pope in all his doinges and teachings, more to be addicted to war, then to peace, yea in such cases, where is no necessity of war. And therein proueth he the Pope to be contrarye to Christ, that is to be Antichrist. Now he proceedeth further to the second part which is of mercy.

MarginaliaDoctrine of Christian mercy declared.In the which part he sheweth how Christ teacheth vs to bee mercifull, because mercye (as he saith) proceedeth from charity, and nourisheth it. In which doctrine of mercy, he breaketh not the lawe of righteousnes, for he himself by mercy hath clensed vs from our sinnes, from which we could not by the righteousnes of the law, bee clensed. But whom he hath made cleane by mercye, vndoubtedlye it behoueth those same to be also mercyfull. For in the. v. chapter of Mathew he saith: Blessed are the mercyfull, for they shall obtaine mercy. The seruaunt therefore fell downe and besought him saying: haue pacience with me, and I wyll pay thee all. And the Lord had pity on that seruaunt, and loosed him, and forgaue him the debt. But when the seruaunt was departed, he found one of hys fellowe seruauntes, which ought him an hundred pence, and he layd handes on him, and tooke him by the throte saying: Pay me that thou owest, and his fellow fell downe and besought him saying: Haue pacience with me, and I wyll pay thee al. But he would not, but went and cast hym into pryson, till he should pay the debt. And when his other fellowes saw the thinges that were done, they wer very sory, and came and declared vnto their maister all that was done. Then his maister called him, and said vnto him: O thou vngracious seruaunt, I forgaue thee all that debt when thou desiredst me: Oughtest not thou also to haue had pitye on thy fellow, euen as I had pity on thee? And hys Lord was wrothe, and deliuered him vnto the Iaylers, tyll he should pay all that was due vnto him. So lykewise shall my heauenly father doo vnto you, except ye forgeue from your hartes eche one his brother theyr trespasses. By this doctrine it is most plaine and mani-
