And surely thys one thing shoulde be a great cause, why euery estate should loue other. And menne of one craft should neither hate, neyther despyse men of another crafte For one of them is so neadeful to another, that oftentimes, those craftes that seme most vnhonest, might worst be forborne. And thus I dare saye, that he that is not labouring in this worlde, either in prayinge and preaching as behoueth priestes, for the helth of the people, or in defending the causes of the nedy, in fvghting against tiraunts, and ennemies, which is the office of knightes, or in labouringe on the earth, that partayneth to the commons, when the day of reckeninge shal come, that is thend of this life, ryghte as he lyued here wythout labour or trauail, so shal he want there the reward of the penny, that is thendles ioyes of heauē. And as he was liuinge here, after no state, nor order, so shal he then be put into the place, where is no order, but euerlasting horror and sorow: that is hel. These be the wordes, that I haue take to entreat vpon. And be thus much to say in Englishe. Come geue a reckening of thy Baliwike. Christ the authoure of pity, and louer of saluacion of his people, in the processe of the gospel enfourmeth euery man, that is his Bailye, by thensample of a Baily, that he monisheth to prepare hym self to make his answer, and to geue a reckenyng, of such goodes as he hathe receyued of Goddes hande, when the day of so strait a reckening shal come, that is the day of dome. And so I at this time, through the help of God, folowing him that is master of so great authority because I know nothing, that shuld more draw away mannes vnreasonable loue, from the vain, and trāsytory ioye of this worlde, then to haue in mynde, the dreadful reckeninge, so far as God permitteth, I at thys tyme, wil shewe you howe you shal dispose you, to auoid then Gods yre and vengeaunce: when ther shalbe so hard iudgement, that we shal geue accompt for euery idle word, that we haue spoken For then shalbe said vnto vs. And we shal haue no power to go backe.

But for further proces of thys fyrste part of this Særmon, know you there be thre Baliwikes, that shalbe called to thys straight reckening. The fyrste shal aunswer for him selfe, and for other. And they be priestes, that haue ouersyghte or cure of mannes soule. The seconde temporal Lordes, that haue the gouernaunce of people. And the third baily shal accompt for him self, or at least haue much læsse charge then thother. And that is euery christen man for that he hath receiued of God. MarginaliaThe fyrst. Seconde. Thyrde.The fyrst question. Howe hast thou entred? The second. How hast thou ruled? The third. How haste thou lyued? And if thou can assoyle these thre questions, and dyscharge thee of them. Was there neuer earthly Lorde (without comparison) that so rewarded his seruauntes, as thy Lorde wil rewarde thee, that is to say, wyth lyfe and ioy euerlastyng. But on the other syde, if thou now regarding not thine own wealth, take no hede of thys reckenyng, if death take thee sodenlye, so that thou pasthence in deadly synne, and euel life, and haue not amended (as thou knowest not, what shal befal thee.) Al the tounges that euer were, or shalbe, cannot expresse the sorow and Wo, that thou shalt suffer. Therfore the desyre of so great ioye and the dreade of so greate payne (though the loue of God were not in thine hart) shuld make thee to thinke euermore, that thou shalt geue a recknyng of thy baliwike. Therfore as I sayd. The first question, that shalbe proponed to the fyrste bayly (that is a prelate or curate) is thus.

How hast thou entred Frend how entredst thou hither, who brought thee into thy offyce, truth or simony. God or the Deuyl, grace or monye, the fleshe or the spirit, geue now thy reckenyng if thou can, if thou can not, I councel thee wythout delay, to learne. For in case thou be called thus or it be nyght, and then for to stād dombe for lacke of knowledge and for confusyon of thyne owne conscyence, thou shalt fal into the sentence that here ensueth. Bynde hys handes and fete, and caste hym into vtter darknes, where is waylyng and grēting of tethe. Therfore I councel that thou aduise thee wel, how thou wylt answer to this question, how hast thou entred? Whether by callinge, or by thine owne procuring for that thou wouldest laboure in Gods gospel, or for that thou wouldest be richly araid? answer to thyne owne conscyence now, as thou shalt or it be longe, answer to God. Thou that hast taken thorder of priesthod on thee whether thou be curate or no, who stirred thee to take so hyghe an estate vppon thee, whether because thou wouldest lyue in Gods contemplation, and studye of Goddes Word, to instruct the people, or for to lyue a delycious lyfe of other mennes sweate, and thy selfe to labour neuer a whyt.

MarginaliaQuestio.And here myght I aske a question, why, also set men their children to schole? Whether for to get them great auauncementes, or to make them the better to knowe God and to serue him: MarginaliaSolutio.Thys theyr ententyon men may see openlye, by the sciences that they put them to. For they set them to the Cannon, Ciuil, or to the temporal lawe, not as to be ministers of Iustyce, to defende the pore in ryghte. &c. But because they thyncke, that these scyences shalbe meanes to make them greate menne in the world. MarginaliaQuestio.And why there be so fewe put to learne the word of God, and to be preachers therof, MarginaliaSolutio.but that there is not such gaines as is in the other. And so care they litle on both partes, for godly liuyng.

And truth it is, that s. Ihon Chrisostome sayth, parents be louyng to the bodies of theyr chvldren, but the soul they regard not, they desire theyr welfare in this world but they passe not what they shal suffer in another. MarginaliaIohannes Chrisostomus Homelia. xxvii.Some ordain great fees for them here, but none ordain they them to Godwarde, the losse of theyr bodies they wil sore bewail, but the helth of their souls they make no recknyng of. If they see them pore, they sorow and sigh, but though they se them syn, they make no manner of mone. And hereby they shew that they brought forth the bodyes, but not the soules.

MarginaliaNota.And now to speake agayn of priestes, if we take hede truelye, we shal perceyue greate abhomynatyons that ben scattered in the church now a dais, by and amongst priestes, we shal wel perceyue, I say, that they come not into Christes fold by Christes callyng for to profyt but by other meanes and wayes, to get them self worldlye wealth. And thys is cause of many errours amonge the people And therfore it is wryttē in the boke of mournyng: Where the Prophet speaketh thus to God.
