accompt of all the offences whiche ye haue eyther committed by your owne fault, or by the Councell or aduise of others, what shall then happen (if these miserable heretickes whyche you here in this world doo so afflicte and tormente, shall come with Christe and hys Apostles and martirs to iudge the xii. tribes of Israel, sitting vpon their seates, if they with like seuerity shall execute their power vppon you) what then I saye, shall become of you? Wyth what face wil ye behold their maiesty whyche here in this world haue shewed no countenās of pity vpon them? With what hart wil ye implore their mercy, which so vnmercifully reiected and cast them of, whē they fled vnto your pity and mercy? Wherfore, if that the eares of Princes be so prompt and ready to harken vnto the councels of others, being voide of councell them selues: whye doo they not rather set a part these flatterers, backbiters and greadye bloude suckers, and harken vnto the wholesome councell of the Propheticall king? which cryinge oute in the Psalmes sayeth: nowe ye kynges, vnderstand, and ye whiche iudge the earth, be wise and learned, serue the Lorde in feare, and reioyse in him with trembling, embrace his sonne, least that ye erre and pearysh from the iust way, for when his wrathe shall sodenly kindle, blessed are all they which trust in him.

Now ye haue heard by what crafte and subtilty this holy martir, and manne of innocent and vndefiled lyfe, was intrapped, and wyth how greate iniquitie and crueltye he was oppressed. And nowe there remained nothynge, but onlye his punishmente and deathe, whych the droncken rage of the byshoppes thoughte not longe to be protracted. Duringe the tyme that he was in prisonne, he wrote an excellēt Apology of his cause vnto king Henry.

After this with gentle woordes, he declared the cause that moued him there vnto, whyche all be it he was not ignoraunte howe odyous this doctrine woulde be vnto the people, yet, notwithstanding, because he was not also ignoraunt, how desirous the kinges minde was to searche oute the truthe, he thought no time vnmeete to performe his duetie, especially for so muche as he would not vtter those thinges vnto the ignoraunte multitude, for auoidynge of offence, but only vnto the Prince him self, vnto whō he might safely declare his mynde.

After this preface made he entereth into thebooke, first confirminge his doctrine touching the Sacrament, by diuers testimonies of the Scriptures, speciallye where as the Gospell doothe appoynt vnto Christe for the reason of his bodye, whether he be conuersaunt here, or risinge, or ascendinge, or sittinge in heauen all waies one only place. Then he gatheringe together the mindes of the aunciente doctors, he did there by maintaine his interpretation, where by he might teache, the reason of the sacrament to be misticall. All be it that he ruled him selfe with suche moderation, that he did not denye, but that the holy Sacramente was the verye naturall bodye of our Sauiour, and the wine his naturall bloud, and that moreouer his naturall body and bloud were in those misteries, but after a certaine manner, as the auncient doctoures in a manner all doo interpreate it.

And thus muche hetherto out of Lambertes booke, and nowe to retourne agayne vnto the story. But before we come to his death and execution, we haue heare to speake of certayne Articles obiected against him to the noumbre of xlv.

Foxe is the only source for the articles, which follow, and for Lambert's responses to them. By Foxe's account, Lambert's replies were not only a very impressive performance, but also very advanced in their theology. In fact, Lambert's views, as presented by Foxe, are quite close to Foxe's views. And this underscores a problem: as the originals of the articles and the replies have not survived, there is no way to determine if Foxe revised either the articles or Lambert's answers.

Marginalia1.IN primis, whether thou was suspect or infamed of heresy.

Marginalia2.Whether euer thou haddest any of Luthers bookes, and namely sith they were condempned, and how long u kepst them, and whether thou hast spent any study on them.

Marginalia4.Whether it be lawful for a priest to marrye a wife, and whether a priest in some case be boūd by the law of God to marry a wife.
