Such stoutnes of hart & wil, yf yt had bene in a cause true and rightfull, myght percase be sufferable. But in what cause so euer yt be, being immoderate, besemeth no man, much lesse one of that vocation. If his cause were good, why dyd he not take the wronge paciently as the true cannon law of the gospell did leade him? If it were (as it was in deade) naughte and wrong, wherto serued so bold sturdy stoutnes, but to shew the impudency of the person, and to make the cause worse, which was bad ynough before? But by lyke he was disposed to declare, yf nede wer, what he was able to do in the law, in shifting of the matter by subtile delatorys, and friuolus cauilyng aboute the law. And yf that would not helpe, yet with fasing, and brasing, and rayling vpon his denoūcers with furious words and irreuerēt behauyour toward the kinges commsioners, he thought to continaunce out the matter before the people, that som thing myght seame yet to be in him: what soeuer was in the cause. But as the common saying goeth, as good neuer a whit, as neuer the better. For al hys crafty cautels and tergiuersacions, aleadged oute yf the law, yet neyther his cause coulde so be defended, nor his behauour so excused, but that he was therfore both iustelye imprisoned and depriued, as by the proces hereof may wel appeare to the reader.

Edmund Bonner

Bishop Edmund Bonner of London was the first to express his dissent from the Royal Visitation of August 1547. Bonner had been translated to London from Hereford in 1540, and had served Henry VIII as a diplomat. He was a committed supporter of the Royal Supremacy, but also an upholder of the conservative Act of Six Articles. When the Royal Commissioners entered his diocese he received them with a protestation that he would observe the Injunctions only 'if they be not contrary and repugnant to God's law and the Statutes and Ordinances of this church…'. This was construed as contumacy, and he was brought before the Council and committed to the Fleet. He protested that his words had been misconstrued, and submitted. For the next two years Bonner conducted himself acceptably in the eyes of the Council, even taking steps to ensure that the First Prayer Book was observed and used when it came into force in June 1549. However, he became increasingly concerned by the spread of radical preaching within his diocese, and by the appearance of extremist pamphlets. Consequently he took no action against Catholic non-conformity, and this worried the Council, particularly given what was happening in the West Country at that time. In August 1549 they sent for Bonner again and required him to preach a sermon at Paul's Cross upon certain articles which were prescribed to him.

MarginaliaBonner charged with slacnes in resorting to the communiō.FOr as much as we are aduertised that emonges other disorders of our subiectes, at this present there be diuers of our City of London and other places within your dioces, which be very neigligent and forgetfull of there duty to almighty god, of whō all good thinges are to be looked for, do assemble them selues very seldom, and fewer tymes then they were heretofore accustomed, to common prayers and to the holy communion, being now a time, when yt were moste nedefull with hart and minde to pray to our heauenly father for his ayde & succour, wherof as we be right sory, so we do vnderstand, that through your euill example, & the slacknes of you in preachinge and instructing our sayd people to do there duties, this offence to god is most generally committed. For where heretofore vpon all principal feastes and such as wer called maius duplex, yea you your selfe was wont to execute in person, now sence the time that wee by the aduice of our whole parlament haue set a most godly and deuout order in our church of Englond and Ierland, ye haue very seldom or neuer executed vpō such or other dayes to the contempt of our proceadinges, and euill example of others. And it is also brought to our knowledge, that diuers aswell in London as in other places of yourdioces, do frequent and haunt foreyne rytes of masses and such as be not allowed by the orders of our Realme, and contempneth and forbeareth to prayse and lawd god, and praie vnto his maiestie, after such right and ceremonies, as in this realme is approued & set out by our auctoryte. MarginaliaBoner charged with suffering or no redressing adultery & fornication in his dioces of London.Further that adultery and fornicacion, is mayneteyned and kept openly and comenly in the sayd City of London, & other places of your dioces, wherby the wrath of god is prouoked against our people, of the which thinges, you being heretofore admonished, yet hetherto haue made no redresse, as to the pastorall office, auctorytie and cure of a Byshop doth appertaine, wherfore we to whome the supreame cure and charge of the church doth apertein, to auoyd from vs the high indignation of almighty god, by the aduice of our most entirely belouid vncle the Lord protectore and the rest of our priuy Coūsaile, haue thoughte yt no lesse then our most bounden dewtie, now at this present and eftsonnes peremptorily to admonish, charge & warne you, that you do most straightly looke vpon the premisses, and se them so refourme that there maie appeare no negligēce on your behalfe, vpon such paine as by our lawes ecclesiyasticall and temporall we may inflict vpon you vnto depriuation or otherwise, as shal seme to vs for the quality of the offence reasonable. And to the intent you should the better se to the reformacion of the said abuses, we haue thought good to geue you these Iniunctions following.

Secōdly you your self in person shal frō hence fourth euery day, which hertofore was accōpted in this church of England, principal feasts or maius duplex, & at al such times as the Bisshops of Lōdon your predecessors were wont to celebrate & sing high masse, now celebrate and execute the communion at the highe aultare in Paules for the better example of all other, except sicknes do lette. Thirdly ye shall your self according to your duetye, and the offyce of a bishop call before you all such as doo not come vnto & frequent the cōmon praier & seruice in the church, or do not com vnto gods bord, and receiue the Communion, at the least once a yere, or whosoeuer do frequent or goo to any other right or seruice then is appointed by our boke eyther of mattens, euensong or masse in any Church chappell or other pryuate places within your dioces, and ye shall see all such offendors conuented before you and punished according to the ecclesiasticall lawes, with seuere & straight lawes, therfore.
