Therefore, whether they may be done meritoriously or no, I will not define: God wotteth. But this I say, that God did neuer institute any such thing in þe new testament, which is þe veritie and rule for all Christen people to folow and beleue. Yea that onely is of perfect surety, and none other, but as it is agreable and hath ground of the same. And lyke as we haue no certaine doctrine institute of Christ, ne his Ddciples, teachyng vs thus for to do: no more is there any merite appointed of hym therefore, as I shewed afore where I tolde my mynde of our merites.

MarginaliaPiè Pietas defined. Siluer fined often & many tymes thorow fier. It hath no chaffe in it, as hath mens traditions, but is pure and cleane wheate, as sheweth Ieremy writyng in this wise. Quid paleis ad titricum? Propter hoc ego ad prophetas, dicit dominus, qui furantur verba mea vnusquisque a proximo suo, & seducunt populum meum in mendacijs suis & in erroribus suis. MarginaliaIerem 23. What is the chaffe to the wheate? Therefore beholde, I will come agaynst the Prophets, sayth the Lord, that steale my worde euery one from hys neighbour, and deceiue my people in their lyes and in their errours. Iames calleth the pure Religion of Christ, saying: Pure and immaculate religion afore God the father is, to visite fatherles children and wydowes in their vexation. MarginaliaIac. 1.

Whereby he meaneth all needy people that are succourles & helpelesse, without counsell and other almes, according to our habilitie, whēsoeuer we see them in neede or distresse.

The other part of this Religion shewed by S. Iames is: That a man should keepe hymselfe cleane frō the world: and that do they, which be not affectionate so vnto any thing therein, but that they haue the thinges of the world, or occupie the same by true dealing, so that they can finde in their hart to depart from them when God shall please, or charitie so requireth.

Thus doyng we shall folow the exhortation of blessed Paule, which writyng to the Corinth. sayth thus: Brethren, the tyme is short, thys remayneth, that they which haue wyues should be as they had them not: & those that weepe, should be as they wept not: and those that bye, as if they were without possession: and they that occupye thys world, as though they occupyed it not: for the fashion of thys worlde passeth away. And this meaneth none other thing, but that we shoulde not loue ne dread any worldly thing, passing measure or inordinatly, but God aboue all thinges, and all other thinges in him or for him: and he that thus doth, fulfilleth the commaundement of Christ, spoken to the rich mā in the Gospell, where he saith: Go and sel all that euer thou hast, and come folow me. What it is to sell away all for the Gospell.
For he hath solde away all that euer he hath, that surely entendeth for the loue of Christ, to helpe the poore with all that he may. Voluntas reputatur pro facto: The will is accepted for the dede, as is sayd cōmonly. And this saying both of Iames, and also of the Euangelist, I thincke verely belongeth to all Christen men that they should performe it, none excepte, neither lay man, ne woman (as we vse to say) but to them as well as to any whom we call religious.

As cōcerning þe reliques & tombes of saints, I haue said vnto your Lordship afore, MarginaliaOur Ladies milke. what I do thinke of the milke of our Lady, MarginaliaThe bloud of Hayles. þe bloud which they say, is at Hayles. Norwich, & other places, wt such other: whereof (I trust) you do know what ought to be done. And I besech god you may do therin as your office doth require, so shewing exāple vnto other prelates, to folow your lordship in good doing, as is comely for a primate to do, remēbring alway, as Paule sayth: the tyme is short, & therfore it were good to set to hand in time.

MarginaliaMoyses Tombe vnknowen. Finally, holy Moyses, when he died, would be so buried that no man should know which was hys graue, as it is witnessed in the boke of Deuteronomie: and that, (as þe expositors testifie) was because þe Iewes, which were prone to new fangled worshippyng, should not fall into Idolatry, worshippyng hym as God, for the great and manifold myracles that were wrought by hym while he was alyue.

MarginaliaTo thinke Pilgrimage to be meritorious, is no point of our beliefe. To conclude, I say, it is no poynt of my belief, to think that oblations and pilgrimages at saintes graues and reliques, are meritorious workes, ne yet that there is any deuociō in so doing: That is godly which is institute by scripture. If you thinke contrary, I would desire to know for mine instruction, what part of scripture should make therfore, agaynst me.

MarginaliaAunswere to the 17. article.¶ In the. xvij. where ye doe aske, whether the fast of lent, and other apoynted by the common lawe, and receaued in common vsage of Christen people (vnlesse necessite otherwise requireth) are to be obserued. I say that in mine opinion they are to be obserued, and fastyng discretly done is commendable, for so shall a man auoyde slouth & be the more ready for to serue God and also hys neighbours: & therby tame the rebellion of carnal concupiscence, according to þe saying of the Poete: Sine cerere & baccho friget venus Without wyne & good fare, lust waxeth cold. And as saynt Hierome: MarginaliaThe saying of Hierome. Venter mero estuans spumat in libidinem: The body enflamed with wyne, bursteth out into luste.

MarginaliaFast broken is of it selfe no sinne. Yet shall not the breaking of these feastes make a man to do deadly sinne, excepte in his minde be some other malicious affection therwyth annexed, as rashnes of mynde, despite, or such lyke, MarginaliaNo positiue law without the foundatiō of scripture, bindeth to deadly sinne. for so much as no positiue law of man, made without foundation of scripture, may bynde any person: so that in breakyng of such, he shall therfore sinne deadly. And of thys sort made by man is the fast of Lent and other dayes ordeyned in your lawes wythout authoritye of scripture, which willeth vs to fast perpetually, eatyng and drinkyng, but when nede requireth (not for any voluptuousnes, as many that recounteth themselues great fasters, I feare haue done) yea and that sparely, foreseyng alway that our stomackes be neuer cloyed with dronkenshyp or surfettyng, as is commaunded by our sauiour in Luke: MarginaliaHow to fast truely after the scripture but contrarywise, after the fashion rather of a certayne Prince that is mentioned (I trow) in Valerius Maximus, that neuer rose from hys meales meate, with a full stomacke, but rather somewhat empty, or hungry: which, as the story testifieth, caused hym to lyue so wonderfull a long season, that a man could vnneth thinke it possible for ones lyfe, to bee so prolonged, had not such a notable author reported it.

God therfore I besech hym, send vs of the swete dew of hys heauenly doctrine, to moysten and supple the earthly ground of our hartes, that we may grow like fashioned vnto hym, putting apart our olde Adam, with all his dissimulation and painted shew, that is much caused by humayne lawes and constitutions, and do vpon Christ, that is þe very truth and the way directing men to the same.
