aduersaries (nether is it in the story of Wickliffe that I can finde or knowe) yet for so much as he did not denye the same, neyther if he so saide, it semeth that he woulde speake it with out some grounde or reson, I haue not thought it good to leue it clene out of memory. Of like credit is this also, whiche is reported of Wickliffe, (whiche thing I do here write but onli of report) that whē as Wickliffe, lying very sicke at London, certain Friers came vnto him to counsel him, and whē they had babled muche vnto him, as touchinge the catholicke churche, and of the acknowleging of his errors, and of the bishop of Rome: MarginaliaA notoble courage of the heauenly spirite in Iohn wickleffe.Wickliffe being moued with the folishnes and absurditie of other talke, with a stoute stomake setting him selfe vpright in his bed, repeted this saying out of the. Cxviii. psalme. MarginaliaNon moriar sed vinā er narrabo opera domini. Psa. 118.I wyll not dye but I shall liue, and shew forthe and declare the noble workes of the Lorde, the whiche thing if it be so trew (as it is reported of some,) it dooth declare & shewe, a great feruency and desire of the spirite in that man passing and a boue the comon state of oure humane nature and infirmitie. But nowe we wyll retourne againe vnto the conclusions.

¶ These conclusions were condemned for heresye.

Marginalia1THe substance of materiall breade and wine, dooth remain in the sacrament of the aulter after the consecration.

Marginalia2The accidents, doo not remayne without the subiecte in the same sacrament, after the consecration.

Marginalia3That Christ is not in the sacrament of the aulter trewly and really in his proper and corporal person.

Marginalia4* Marginalia* This article eyther is slaunderusly reported, or els cā hardly be defended.That if a bishop or a priest be in dedly sinne, he doth not order consecrate nor baptise.

That if a man, be dewly and trewly contrite and penitent, all exterior and outer confession, is but superfluous and vnprofitable vnto hym.

Marginalia6That it is not founde or stablished by the Gospell, that Christe did make or ordayne masse.

Marginalia7If the Pope be a reprobate and euell man, and consequently amember of the deuell, he hathe no power by any maner of meanes geuen vnto him ouer faithfull Christianes, except peraduenture it be geuen him from the Emperour.

Marginalia8That since the tyme of Vrbane the sixt, there is none to be receaued for Pope, but to lyue after the maner of the Grekes, euery man vnder hys owne lawe.

Marginalia9* MarginaliaHe meneth, churche goods not to be so peculiar to ministers but þt they may be taken away if they so deue.To be against the scripture, that ecclesiasticall ministers shoulde haue any temporall possessyons.

¶ These Articles folowing wer condemned as erroneous.

Marginalia10THat no Prelate oughte to excommunicate any mā, except he knew hym fyrste to be excomunicate of God.

Marginalia11That he whiche doothe so excomunicate any man, is therby him selfe eyther an Heritycke or excomunicated.

Marginalia12That a Prelate or Bisshop excomunicatyng any of the Clergy, whiche hathe appealed to the kynge or to the Counsell, is therby himselfe a traytor to the kynge and Realme.

Marginalia13That all suche whiche doo leue of preching or hering the worde of God or preching of the gospell, for feare of excomunication, they are all redy excomunicated, and in the day of Iudgement, shalbe counted as traytors vnto God.

Marginalia14That it is lawfull for any man, eyther deacon or Prieste, to preache the word of God, without the autoritie or lycence of theapostolike Sea or any other of his catholickes.

Marginalia15 Marginalia¶ This article peraduenture was not so straytly mēt of him as it wathered of them as is afore saidThat so longe as a man is in dedly sinne, he is neyther Byshop nor Prelate in the Churche of God,

Marginalia17That Tenthes are pure aulmes, and that the parissoners may for the offence of their Curates, deteyne and kepe them backe, and bestow them vpon others, at theyr owne wyll and pleasures.

Marginalia18Also that all speciall prayers applyed to any priuate or perticuler person, by any Prelate or religious man, do no more profite the same person, then generall or vniuersall prayers do profet others, whiche be in lyke case or state vnto hym,

Marginalia19More ouer, in that any man doth enter into any priuate Religion, what so euer it be, he is therby made, the more vnapte and vnable to obserue and kepe the commaundementes of God.

Marginalia20That holy men whiche haue instituted pryuate religions, what soeuer they be, as wel such as are indowed and possessed, as also the order of begging Fryers, hauing no possessions in so dooyng they haue greuously offended.

Marginalia21That Religious men, being in their priuate religiones, are not of the Christian Religion.

Marginalia22That Fryers are bounden to get theyr lyuyng, by the laboure of theyr handes and not by beggynge.

Marginalia23That whosoeuer doth geue any aulmes vnto Fryers, or to any beggyng obseruante, is ac-accursed or in daunger therof.
